5 & dime bagel are well known for their traditional boiled bagels but now they will be well known for their Jersey style pizzas too. At their Katherine Place store they’re doing bagels by day and pizzas by night. The difference between an Aussie pizza and a Jersey pizza is that they put the sauce on top, after the cheese and after the toppings. Crazy right? Totally delicious though. Oh and they call a margarita pizza a tomato pie. Whatever you wanna call it, that margarita tomato pie thing was absolutely delicious. And so were the other pizzas we tried. And did I mention they also do a giant pizza bagel?
These were bagel pizza starters, like garlic bread in bagel form.
The tomato pie is basically a margarita pizza but I love that they call it pie because it sounds a lot more like comfort food. And it was exactly that. A crisp fluffy base with buffalo milk mozzarella, aged parmesan, tomato sauce and basil which was super fresh and fragrant.
The sausage and mushroom pizza was delicious. They use quality ingredients and take care in making the pizza which shows in the overall taste. They stretch out the dough, put down some mozzarella and aged parmesan, evenly sprinkle the pork and fennel sausage and wild mushrooms then add the tomato sauce on top just like they do in Jersey.
Pepperoni, a classic. It had lots of pepperoni, buffalo milk mozzarella, aged parmesan and tomato sauce on top. And just to clarify, the tomato sauce is the pizza sauce not actual tomato sauce (like ketchup) that you put on a meat pie, which is also confusing because in Jersey they call pizza a pie. So yes, for the purpose of this review the tomato sauce I’m referring to is pizza sauce which you probably understood already without this longwinded explanation.
Anyhew the next pizza was the broccolini one. I personally love broccoli but I know some people who get a little scared when greens start encroaching on their traditional pizzas. Why not eat your greens and your pizza too, I say. It had brocollini, caramelised onion jam, pickled chilli, a herby white sauce, buffalo mozzarella and aged parmesan.
Finally, the giant bagel pizza. The owner told us when he used to have left over bagels at home he would put sauce and cheese on top to make a little bagel pizza snack. This is basically that snack materialised in hulk form. It looks so impressive and is tasty too. It’s kind of like a deep-pan pizza.
We tried this awesome double IPA beer from Westside Ale Works which was sweet and delicious. Loved it.
The bagel pudding served with milk custard was a lovely dessert. It was like a bread and butter pudding but made with bagels. Delish.
All the bagels are vegan and they can do vegan pizzas too with vegan dough and vegan cheese etc. You can pop in for a slice or a whole pizza, up to you. They do the pizzas Jersey style with the sauce on top, the dough has a 3 day fermentation process and they cook the pizzas in a wood-fire oven. Pizza lovers ahoy - 5 & Dime Pizza should be next on your list.
