Basco Brunswick does Mexican food with an Asian twist. It's pretty ballsy doing fusion food because you’ve really gotta execute the flavours if you're going to mix and match. At Basco Brunswick they do it well. Their tacos aren’t the traditional flavours but they have things like Korean fried chicken, duck with hoisin and crispy soft-shell crab. We had a hard time choosing our tacos because they all sounded delicious. Casual vibes, awesome food and great cocktails.
My cocktail was called ‘tequilla mockingbird,’ loved the name and it was delish too. It had ginger infused tequilla, triple sec, fresh lemon, apple juice, honey and mint. So yum.
To snack on we had the ‘Snacky Chan’ which was house-made tortilla chips with guac, and then there was the kaffir lime salsa which gave it that Asian spin.
The Viet corn was yum. The little corn on the cobs were doused in nouc cham sauce and topped with sliced chilli, fresh herbs and crispy shallots.
I love ribs and these were amazing. The Shanghai lamb ribs were soft and sticky and melted in your mouth. They were marinated with Cointreau (orange liquor), maple and Chinese black vinegar bbq sauce. The meat was falling off the bone. Loved it.
We also had the Foshan pork which was twice cooked pork shoulder with a soy honey ginger and mandarin glaze which was sweet and caramalised. The pickled fennel, apple and carrot slaw added crunch and freshness.
Then onto the tacos. The KFC (Korean fried chicken) taco is a favourite and for obvious reasons. It had crunchy Korean fried chicken with slaw, gochujang (chilli paste) sauce, sriracha mayo and pickled ginger on top.
The grilled silk taco sounded interesting so we had to order it. It was crispy light tempura avocado with slaw, chipotle black beans, sriracha mayo, pickled onion and fresh herbs. A good veg option.
The flying duck taco had shredded roast duck which had been roasting for 4hrs so it was super tender. The duck was paired with it’s besties, hoisin sauce, cucumber and spring onions. Then there was also some slaw, sriracha mayo, herbs and crispy shallots.
The tainted love taco was tempura battered soft-shell crab which had a good deep fried crunch and fresh zingy flavours to balance the richness like slaw, pickled carrot, chilli onion relish, ponzu aioli and herbs.
For dessert we had churros. They were freshly made and dusted with sugar and cinnamon. We got both the chocolate and caramel sauce and they were amazing. The churros were thick and had a good crunch with fluffy insides. And the sauce was runny enough just to coat the churros. We were actually really full at this stage but miraculously felt better after eating the churros. We found a whole new stomach for dessert.
The tacos are fresh and the Asian twist works. They do a ‘feed me’ menu for $32 which is good value. It’s a great place for bevvies and tacos in Brunswick.
I heart Basco Brunswick!
