Buenos Dias is a Latin American café in Carlton. If you’re looking for a different style of brunch, with a bit more Latin American flavour, this ones for you. They make their own chorizo, sauces, salsas and dulce de leche caramel in-house which keeps the flavours authentic. At Buenos Dias you can still have your smashed avo or your poached eggs with salmon, but with a wonderful Latin American twist.
We started with something sweet. The Plantano Asado which is Colombian baked plantain with melted cheese and bocadillo (guava paste). The plaintain is baked so it has some resistance on the outside and is super soft in the middle then it’s topped with melted cheese and sweet guava paste on top. It was a rather unusual combination of flavours but they worked well together.
At Buenos Dias they know how to make a great sauce. You just want them to bottle it up for you so you can take it home and eat it with everything. We tried three of their sauces, a green Argentinian chimmichurri, a red smoky Peruvian pebre and a chunky Colombian hogao. All amazing and what better to eat them with than salt dusted potatoes. Warning: go easy on these taters coz remember how you still have a main meal to eat. I learnt the hard way (but tbh I’d probably do it again).
The Royal inca eggs is how you do brunch Peruvian style. The slow cooked sous vide-style eggs were served on toasted organic sourdough with smoked salmon, spinach and little mini yellow potatoes. Again with the amazing sauces, this dish was drizzled with their house-made tari tari sauce, which was creamy and mildly spicy made with aji amarillo peppers from Peru.
They make a lot of things in-house including their chorizo. Instead of the meat being minced, it had actual pieces of meat. The chorizo gaucho is an Argentinian dish with two house made chorizos on arepa (little corn flat breads) served with that remarkable chimmichurri.
The Calentao Rolo was a Colombian dish, which was tasty and oh so filling. It was spiced rice w house made chorizo, pulled pork and beans topped with arepa, smashed avo and a fried egg on top.
Alfajores are my new favourite thing. They are a traditional Latin American cookie (kind of like crumbly, buttery shortbread) filled with house made dulce de leche which is like a soft sweet milky caramel.
And the ones they made at Buenos Dias are also covered in a layer of decadent chocolate. They also have a nutella version for those nutella fiends out there. But personally the original dulce de leche version is my fave.
Buenos Dias has a lovely menu with genuine Latin American flavours. We left happy with a full belly.
I heart Buenos Dias!
