David’s spicy pot on Elizabeth street is sister to david’s hot pot on La trobe street. The difference is instead of having the big soup boiling over the fire in the middle where you cook your own ingredients, at spicy pot you choose your ingredients, select a broth and they cook it for you. Admittedly the traditional hot pot experience is heaps of fun but if you want something more casual or are popping in for lunch or a quick visit, spicy pot’s probably a better suit.
First you grab a big pot and tongs and pick all of the ingredients you desire. They have a good variety of ingrediants, lots of different noodles, vegetables, seafood and meats. I always try to squeeze in a little bit of everything but they charge you by weight so keep that in mind. I love that they have so many different types of tofu; firm tofu, silken tofu, fried tofu, fish tofu, bean curd skin, and the list goes on.
Then you choose your broth. They have spicy malantang which is my fave, pork broth which is smooth and silky and sweet and sour soup for a bit more tang.
The ‘meat pie’ is a little different to our aussie meat pie but it’s absolutely delicious. It’s basically roti bread filled with spicy cumin beef and deep fried. It’s a treat.
I heart David’s Spicy Pot!
