Fancy Hanks is that loveable bqq, slow cooked, smoked meat bonanza on Bourke street. Now think of all of that soul food goodness in a brunch menu. Yep, that’s right folks, Fancy Hanks is doing bottomless brunch and they’re doing it well.
Every Sunday from 12pm-2pm you can have bottomless cocktails (Kentucky iced tea & pomelo spritz) and two brunch dishes of your choice for only $50. If you’re still hungry you can order extra dishes for $12.50 but if you team up with a friend and order two different menu items each and share, you can almost try the whole menu. So grab you’re friends for a Sunday sesh coz this is a goodie.
Valentina’s style breakfast tacos were one of my faves. It was smoky beef brisket in a taco with scrambled egg, cheese and ranchero salsa. It was everything I was expecting when I heard Fancy Hanks was doing brunch. It ticked all of the boxes. Scrambled eggs, smoky meat and super tasty, tick, tick, tick.
The smoked chicken tamale was lovely. A tamale is dough made out of corn and when it’s cooked, the texture is kind of like a corn flavoured polenta. This dough was rolled up and filled with the smoked chicken inside. Over the top it had a green herby salsa and a generous serve of queso (melted cheese).
The poached eggs with sausage gravy were sitting on a thick slice of cornbread. The cornbread was buttery and flavourful. The poached egg had oozy yolks when we cut into them and it was all covered in that tasty sausage gravy that was moreish.
The spicy spare ribs were tasty. They had a crisp fried outer and the meat was tender. Then it was brushed with a sweet habanero glaze, rib rub and was topped with spring onion and peanuts to garnish. I would say it’s not too spicy so you could probably still order them if you like a bit of mild.
The smoked eggplant was great with the roasted slices of shitake mushrooms. It had some vegan ranch over the top which was made with avocado and pickled onions which brightened up the dish with a bit of zing.
The toasted buttermilk biscuits were insanely good. They were kind of like savoury scones but with jalepeno butter and house made preserve which was fig jam. The sweetness of the fig and the spiciness of the jalepeno married well. And on top of that fluffy buttermilk biscuit, I was a happy chappy.
I heart Fancy Hanks!
