When you walk into Fujitei it feels like you’ve been transported to a restaurant in Japan. It has a calming, warm and welcoming atmosphere and the menu is modern while honouring the traditional flavours and techniques. The menu is exciting and has lots to choose from and the high-quality produce makes all the difference.
We started with the carpaccio which was kind of like sashimi but cut a little thinner. We had a combination of Tuna, snapper and salmon. It was served with a lovely ponzu vingarette.
The Hotate Yaki was delicious. It was a couple of Hokkaido scallops (big ones) served in the shell with mushrooms and topped with a spicy cod roe mayo. The top was blow torched so it had that flamed flavour.
We had the steamed soy duck breast which was sliced thinly and served simply with some onion and mustard. It was served cold and was super tasty.
The cured black cod was one of my faves. The fish was tender and flaked away beautifully and was served with the chef’s special miso sauce which was absolutely delicious.
The pan-fried salmon fillet was soft and was served with a spicy cod roe mayo which was creamy and salty.
The Houba Yaki was a wonderful experience and added a bit of theatre to the meal. They brought out a little grill to the table which had a dry Mongolian leaf on top with miso paste then the slices of premium wagyu lay on top. The meat was served blue to rare and you can keep it cooking on the grill until you’re ready to eat it. We turned the pieces over to warm both sides then ate it. The meat was tender and had a gorgeous smoky miso flavour.
The udon noodles were awesome, the soup had a beautiful flavour and the noodles had an excellent chew. You can choose to have your udon hot or cold, we had ours hot with the prawn and veg tempura which had a light crispy batter.
The dessert looked cute but it tasted even better than it looked. The cubes of black sesame panna cotta had a subtleness to it and the texture was light and super airy and smooth. They had a touch of berry coulis on top which added a bit of sweet and tartness. It was restrained and very well balanced. It came with a scoop of black sesame ice-cream that was creamy and again had a lovely flavour of black sesame. The perfect way to end the meal.
I heart Fujitei!
