The third Hanoi Hannah has arrived in Richmond and they're serving up mouthwatering Vietnamese food as usual. They have some new stuff on the menu and it really hits the mark. They have a large open space and like other stores have a little express bar on the side so you can eat or pick up a quick meal next door. At Hanoi Hannah's New Quarter there’s lots of delicious hawker style Vietnamese food to be had and you'll leave there with a smile from ear to ear.
We started with a watermelon spritz, so refreshing and way too easy to drink.
The kingfish tartare was fresh and so good. It was convenient to eat it with the deep fried black sesame rice paper which was kind of like a prawn cracker. It was small delicious delicately cut cubes of fresh kingfish with pineapple, sorrel and fresh green tomato.
Hanoi Hannah always do a tasty rice paper roll and this was no different. We tried the tuna sashimi.
And the charred asparagus with enoki mushroom.
The salt and pepper calamari was lightly battered, crispy on the outside and beautifully soft on the middle. It was dusted with chilli and kaffir lime salt which elevated the deliciousness.
The pho cuon is their signature dish and after eating it - it is obvious why. You cannot visit New Quarter without trying these - they're next level. The filling is wok tossed lemongrass beef, fresh basil and veg thinly sliced encased in a rice noodle sheet. Then you dip it in the nouc mam which is sweet, salty and sour and take a bite and this dish has just taken you to heaven and back.
I usually like the meat versions of things but the veggie patch fried rice was ridiculously delicious. The asparagus was charred, the shiitake flavour was intense and it had lots of egg fried in and spring onions. Loved this.
The grilled calamari salad was nice, it had a bit of ginger, chilli, some fresh herbs and pomelo which was kind of like a grapefruit but sweeter.
Cha ca is something I haven’t had before but now I would like to eat it again and again. The rockling was a bright turmeric yellow and cooked on a sizzling plate with lots of fresh herbs and then popped on top of a bed of vermicelli. Simple and delicious.
Lastly for dessert we had the tiri-mi-sally. You may have eaten this dessert before at Saigon Sally. It’s a tasty dessert based on a tiramisu with layers of Vietnamese coffee and peanut brittle ice-cream.
I heart Hanoi Hannah New Quarter!
