When you’re in Melbourne and in the mood for German food Hofbrauhaus is probably the first place that comes to mind. But have you had a Bavarian brunch before? There were lots of dishes I had never heard of and could barely pronounce but they were delicious. Hofbrauhaus will be doing Bavarian brunch every Sunday from 11am so you can try it for yourself.
Coffee with brunch is necessary. But this is the kind of brunch place where you can have a cheeky beer with your brekky or a brunchy cocktail. They had mimosas, aperol spritz and an elderflower and mint spritz on the menu.
We started with the Weisswurst Fruhstuck (try saying that five times in a row). It was traditional breakfast sausages served in a poaching broth with a freshly baked bretzel, whipped butter and sweet Bavarian mustard.
I always get the warm Bretzel with whipped butter when I go to Hofbrauhaus its bomb but with the addition of sweet mustard and a delicate veal and pork sausage it was even better.
We had the Bayrischer Benedict next which was a Bavarian bretzel knodel (like a bready dumpling cut into slices) with shaved ham, poched eggs and béarnaise sauce over the top. At first I thought the knodel was bread but it had more of a moist texture and was super flavoursome. Upon further inspection I realised it had bits of bretzel in a mixture with herbs and onion which made it unique and significantly different to other benedicts I’ve had. It was yum.
For dessert we had the Kaiserschmarn which apparently is the result of a historical pancake accident. It’s a shredded pancake so basically a pancake torn into bite-sized pieces which btw makes it easier to eat. It was served with plum jam, whipped cream and fresh berries.
I heart Bavarian brunch at Hofbrauhaus!
