The décor was vintage, full of character and not unlike the inside of a tavern. This cosy ‘palace’ is a place to drink and dine. The casual atmosphere makes you want to hang out with mates, tuck in to some pizza and settle in for some bevvies.
This was the first time I tried an orange wine and it was divine, just wanted to rhyme. It was called Patrick Sullivan Haggis 2018 and it tasted light like a white wine but had fruity depth like a red wine. Could easily guzzle a bottle.
Mozzarella sticks were a great way to start. They were thick cigars of cheese with a crumb coating that had structural integrity so you could hold and dip them into the pizza sauce with ease. When you took a bite, an epic cheese pull was materialised and each bite you took began another unintended cheese pull. So delicious and fun to eat.
Even though ‘Ramblr’ (the modern Chinese restaurant in South Yarra) has now closed you can still experience the Chinese Bolognese in pizza form at Leonardo’s and it’s delicious. It had a white sauce base with lashings of beef mince in an intense Asian sauce and lots of fresh scallions on top.
The mushroom pizza was a special and had a light and fresh Napoli sauce base with assorted mushrooms, red onion and fior de latte.
I heart Leonardo’s Pizza Palace!
