Messer opened recently in Fitzroy and are dishing up European inspired meals using fine seasonal produce. There’s a lot of seafood dishes, comfort food and good wine available. It’s all in the detail here, the ingredients are prepared with care and presented beautifully.
The decor was stylish and sophisticated.
These pickled cucumbers were a good little starter to awaken the palette.
The wood-fired flatbread was soft and fluffy. It had a good charred flavour with thinly sliced potato, caramelised onion and chunks of speck.
The smoked trout ‘sandwich’ was a cute little dish with melt-in-your-mouth smoked trout sandwiched between two pieces of crispy trout skin topped with caviar. Delish.
The grilled yabby was cooked perfectly and served with sriracha butter and a bit of brioche which was super buttery, had lots of layers like a croissant and had toasted charred blackened crisp edges.
The local mushroom angelini tasted clean and simple to highlight those local mushies. The pasta was fresh and similar to fettucini and had a good amount of grana padano (similar to parmesan) grated over the top.
Potato is always a good side and this rotisserie dutch cream potato was soft, creamy and buttery, served simply in a bowl with Dijon and krautersalz.
We had half a kilo of mixed clams with fennel and sherry, which was fun because they were different sizes and most importantly full of flavour. It was served with little choux balls to dip and soak up the sauce.
The malted banana mini bundt cake was adorable and had was perfect with a cup of coffee.
The buttermilk panna cotta was smooth with a light verjuice caramel and charred crisp rice to add some crunch.
I heart Messer!
