Being inspired by the London subway was how Northcote STN was born. The guys behind Workshop Bros have created another successful restaurant, this time in Northcote serving up savoury and sweet options for breakfast and lunch. The space is predominantly white with a minimalist feel, which i imagine is reminiscent of the London subway. At this station, you won’t mind making a few stops. It has a great atmosphere and the food is fabulous.
Stop by for a coffee and stay for brunch.
They do a good matcha latte.
We got the small salted caramel milkshake which was bubbly on top and had the perfect sweet to milk ratio. I loved that they had the choice of a regular milkshake or a miniature version because I can’t drink too much dairy so the little one was perfect for me.
The slow cooked beef cheek was delicious and pulled apart so easily. They had the beef sitting on two rounds of rosemary potato hash with poachies on top drenched with béarnaise. Talk about indulgent. It came with spiced cabbage and crispy apple slaw to add crunch and cut through the richness. I liked how it was presented in two separate parts with the slaw in the middle because it made it easy to share the dish between two people (for those who like to go halvies).
Big, light, pillowy lemon and parmesan gnocchi was the second savoury meal we tried. The parmesan in the gnocchi was melted and crispy. It was served with a butternut pumpkin sauce, walnuts, crispy sage and onion three ways (burnt onion skin, braised onion and a battered deep-fried onion ring spiral) with a fresh, herby pesto to bring it all together.
The red velvet pancakes are a popular dish with two fluffy bright red pancakes topped with freeze dried fruits, raspberry, white chocolate soil and mascarpone. I loved the coconut meringues; they were firm but had a soft chewy centre, just perfect.
The chai brioche had a good charred crunch on the outside and pared well with the chai infused Corella pear which was easy to cut through. The peanut butter parfait had a subtle flavour and the mandarin pieces added a sweetness and acidity to the dish. The espresso and star anise glaze was sticky and rich and was drizzled around the dish, just to make it even more delicious.
Whether you’re a savoury lover or a sweet tooth, you will be able to find a dish that satisfies at Northcote STN.
I heart Northcote STN!
