Piquancy is an Indian restaurant newly opened in Hawthorn. The meaning of the word piquancy is ‘a pleasantly sharp and appetising flavour’ which describes this restaurant to a tee. The flavours are bold, unique and delicious. The same crew who created Babu Ji in St Kilda have created this new restaurant showcasing traditional Indian flavours. The food is sure to put a smile on your dial and take you to the streets of India all in one mouthful.
At the launch we got to make our own samosas. It was fun and easy to assemble. Call me bias but it was absolutely delicious if I do say so myself (baring in mind I didn’t actually do any of the hard yakka like making the dough and frying it up).
We started with some street food starters. Pani puri is always a fabulous way to start an Indian feast. You pour the green tangy, spicy, sweet liquid into the open fried puffed pastry balls filled with mashed potato, chick peas and yoghurt. An absolute flavour bomb in your mouth.
The Tulsi Nimbu Fish Tikka was a parcel of Atlantic salmon cooked in tikka, topped with dill, lime, garlic & avo salsa which added a freshness to the dish.
The cauliflower was delish. The cauliflower florets were pan tossed in a sticky tomato, honey & chilli sauce.
The Seekh Gilafi was charcoaled lamb from Macedon Ranges. The meat was tender and juicy and I loved that they were skewered on rosemary sticks for extra flavour. They were paired with a spicy yoghurt chutney.
The beetroot paneer looked amazing. The squares of curd cheese were topped with tandoori charred vegetables and covered in a bright pink beet sauce. The flavours and textures were unique, the more I ate the more I wanted to keep eating.
After all these starters we got stuck into the pot food. There was a butter chicken which had free range chicken cooked w tomato, cardamom & fenugreek. The lamb Kafirina was a rich stew of roasted lamb, ginger, garlic, coconut cream & lime leaf. The Anjeer kekofte was a fig, pomegranate & cashew dumpling curry. This one was vegetarian and the dumplings were like little delicious falafels. And lastly dal makhani was black lentils, ginger, garlic, & garam masala slow cooked for 12 hours. These amazing curries were accompanied by premium aged basmati rice and naan. Piquancy cater for different dietary requirements and offer replacements like gluten free naan and cauliflower rice.
We finished off with a light dessert, Kulfi. It was housemade and was a sweet stick of sweetness. It was like ice cream on a stick which kind of tasted like condensed milk with a warming cardamom and sweet honey flavour. It was creamy with bits of pistachio. Yummy
Piquancy is a great place to settle in for a session of Indian comfort food.
