A mountain of shaved ice adorned with jellies, pearls, mochi and the likes is what to expect when you order a ‘Bingsu’ at Scoopy Milkbar. It’s topped with whipped cream that’s made in-house and covers the top of the dessert like a snow-capped mountain. A small pot of condensed milk sits on the sidelines ready to be poured over the top. Ooooh yea.
Scoopy Milkbar has set up shop temporarily in the HWKR food centre where the restaurants rotate every few months. Translation: get there now because it’s only available for a limited time.
The Royal Taro was my favourite. The milky shaved ice had a prominent taro flavour and the varied toppings created a textural wonderland. The blueberry pearls effortlessly burst in your mouth, the boba had a glutinous chew, the squares of rainbow jelly melted apart with the slightest pressure and the mochi was soft and powdery. One scoop of this will have you warding off all rogue spoons trying to get a sneaky taste. Hands off my ‘bingsu’ you’ll say to your friends with assertion.
Matcha and red bean are made for each other, unlike most of the couples paired on MAFS. The matcha green tea flavour had a good level of bitterness verses sweetness that balanced well. There were pockets of sweet red beans, lychee popping pearls, chocolate soil and pieces of red bean mochi and poky sticks. It was nice to have the bitterness of the green tea against all of the sweet accompaniments.
Pouring the pot of condensed milk over the top was lots of fun.
