Shanklin café is a popular brunch spot in Hawthorn East where they serve delicious dishes and sizable portions. It has middle eastern vibes with the shanklish eggs, shukshuka, zaatar spices etc. which brings lots of flavour to your favourite brunch dishes. Think lashings of avocado, silky scrambled eggs, crumbed mushrooms and fried halloumi, they have it all.
Their signature dish eggs and shanklish was amazing. I had the eggs scrambled which were light and silky, the soft shanklish cheese added a lovely salty touch. Then there was a generous serve of crispy bacon, sautéed spinach, mushrooms and cherry tomatoes on a piece of sourdough. It had some fresh mint, dill and spring onions over the top that made this dish even more delicious.
The potato rosti was super crunchy and had thinly sliced smoked salmon with two poached eggs covered in a buttery hollandaise with grilled asparagus. All the flavours married well.
The portobello mushroom was crumbed in panko and deep fried with zaatar spices. It was delicious and super moist. It came with a romesco sauce with roasted capsicum, spinach, halloumi, two poached eggs and chilli oil.
The shashuka was served in a hot iron pan with the baked eggs sitting in a red pepper and cherry tomato sauce. It had big pieces of chorizo, goat cheese sprinkled over the top and some toasted sourdough to mop it all up.
For dessert we had to try the Nutella stuffed pancakes. They were thick and had Nutella through the middle with chocolate sauce over the top, strawberries, banana, big scoops of vanilla ice cream and oreos and oreo crumble. A sight to behold.
I heart Shanklin Cafe!
