The crew from Hochi mama have opened up a new Vietnamese restaurant in the city but this one never sleeps. Twenty pho seven does all the Viet classics like bahn mi, spring rolls, rice paper rolls, and of course the main event, pho. It’s kinda comforting knowing you can eat a hearty bowl of pho at any hour of the day.
We started with homemade spring rolls. Vietnamese spring rolls are traditionally served with lettuce leaves, Vietnamese basil and nuoc mam (spicy fish dipping sauce).
You grab the lettuce leaf and pop the spring roll in the centre, add a piece of fresh basil, and roll it up. Then you dip it into that sweet, sour, spicy fish sauce. The lettuce is fresh, the spring roll had a good crunch and tasty filling mixed with vermicelli noodles, and the dipping sauce had a good chilli kick.
The rice paper rolls were packed with pork and prawn fillings. The skin was thin and the fillings were fresh. It came with a traditional satay sauce which also had some of those kick ass chillies.
The pho has a lovely light broth and the toppings can be customised to your taste. They also have one 'pho the vegans' with vegetables cooked for 5 hours in a vegetable broth. We had the beef combination which had thinly sliced beef and all the trimmings including tripe, tendon, brisket and beef balls. Usually I’d order just the sliced beef option but this was nice too.
If you love pearls in your bubble tea you will love the ‘straight outta Saigon’ cocktail because it has alcoholic bobba (pearls). It's gin, cucumber, mint, elderflower and yuzu infused alcoholic bobbas. They also have an espresso martini with Vietnamese coffee and black pearls and non-alcoholic bubble tea available too.
I heart Twenty Pho Seven!
